Clothes are expensive. Lets face it, ladies, we wear clothing until it’s threadbare just so we do not have to spend money on more. For some of us, shopping could be the best thing in the world, but if you are like me, it is a nightmare. Nothing ever fits and you just do not like the styles out right now. You could wait for the new line to come out or shop in thrift stores, and it will probably work out just fine. However, this approach will not work when pregnant. This is a time in life when your body will be changing not just from month to month but sometimes week to week to week. So here are a few pointers to keeping your thin budget from bursting as it tries to keep up with your belly.
Belts and Belly Buttons
Before going out and buying those expensive maternity jeans, just look at the jeans you already have. If you are like me, your weight has fluctuated over time and you have a pair or two that are too big. Go on the hunt for a belly button band, or maternity belt to add to those now useful castaways. The belly button band is a product offered by many maternity clothing lines that buttons to your pre-pregnancy jeans and stretches with your growing belly! Many styles look just like the bottom of a tank top, and you get that layered look without the added heat. The maternity belt is the same idea but adds more warmth and support to your belly. This clothing article looks like a tube top stretched out. You stretch it over your pants and up over your belly buttons, again creating the layered look. But, the belt gives your belly support while holding up yours jeans.
Go to a store and try on both; some maternity sections have an artificial belly you can try clothing on over and, if not, just ball up a shopping bag with a sweater or few shirts. Whatever you decide, just make sure you try it on first and that it is made of quality material, because you want this little gem to last.
Quality over Quantity
Good quality maternity clothing is designed to change with your body. Do not shy away from purchasing a few key items when pregnant to ensure your comfort. Besides, have you not always wanted to try on those long flowing dresses and super cute shirts reserved only for pregnant women? I know I have, and splurging on just a few items is fine. An item to really think about here is bras. Your body will be changing everywhere, and support for your breasts is very important. Get fitted for a new bra every now and then. Don’t forget to invest in nursing bras before the baby is born – they have a protective coating against leaking, which will happen before you expect.
Make yourself happy
You will feel better when you look better, so do not settle for some frumpy old clothes just because they fit. Get out and hunt for the bargains we all know exist, and maybe even try your hand at sewing your own clothes. Just make sure you are comfortable in whatever you end up wearing. Because when Mom is happy, everyone else is happy too.
