STIs & STDs, No Problem?

I go to a really great high school.  Most of the kids are from middle class families.  They’ve probably messed around but they’re not the type to have an STD. Anyway my boyfriend wouldn’t have one I knew him and we had been together for 6 months.

I went to Health class and I heard all about STDs and I know they’re out there.  For some reason I just didn’t think it would happen to me.  I’ve only had two partners and I have friends who have had 7 or more and they don’t have anything.  I guess!?!? Anyway they don’t talk about it.

Then again, I haven’t told any of my friends that I had one and I definitely do not want them to know.  I never really thought about it until I noticed I had some bumps. It really freaked me out.  I checked online and found this place that does testing for free.  I couldn’t use my insurance because I did not want my parents to know. Getting tested is not cheap.

So I made an appointment at Women’s Center-East Dayton, Ohio.  I was so scared and so embarrassed but it turned out the ladies were nice and didn’t make me feel bad.  They did have me watch a video on “sex” and I thought it would be weird.  I have to admit it was good and I learned a few things they didn’t teach me in Health Class.

When I had the test I found out I had genital HPV (warts) –pretty gross!  I had them removed (not a fun thing.)  The nurse practitioner told me the infection would clear up on its own, but if the warts came back to come in for another “treatment.” I guess having “safe sex” with my boyfriend wasn’t so safe.  I thought I knew him and I thought I could trust him.  I guess I didn’t really know him. I was on the pill and we used condoms (most of the time.)  The Nurse Practitioner reminded me that HPV is transferred by skin to skin contact.

I know once you’ve been sexually active it’s hard to stop.  I’ve been there.  I talked to a friend of mine and we decided to make some changes.
